Key Skills for the Interactive Whiteboard – for staff training

The purpose of this section is to provide interactive whiteboard users with a series of key whiteboard skills. These skills are generic and can be used across the curriculum. Helpsheets are available for Smart Notebook and Activ Primary 2. Example files are also available which demonstrate the application of this interactive whiteboard key skill to a KS1/2 curriculum area.

Hide and Reveal:

This series of activities looks at the key skill of hiding and revealing part of the whiteboard. In essence, the teacher creates a whiteboard notebook file and, in one way or another hides a part of the information to reveal with the children during the course of the lesson.

We suggest that these materials be used for staff training in the following way:

• After an initial, hands-on look at the technique,
• staff are given time to make materials and use them with their class/ curriculum area.
• Returning at a later staff meeting, staff can show their use and application of the key skill.

In this way staff will learn together and support each other. These four key hide and reveal techniques have been selected because they considerably increase the effectiveness of the whiteboard use for learning and teaching. (We have others.)
